Navneet Sikera is a 1996 batch IPS officer of Uttar Pradesh cadre. Inspired by parts of his life, writers Mandali Ashish Moheyin, Jai Sheela Bansal and Jatin Wagle produced an ambitious 10 episode web series for MX Player – Bhaukaal. The first season was released in 2020 and now its second season has been released and it also has 10 episodes. As effective as the first season was, the second season looks equally confused. There is not a lot of characters in the story, but there are so many character artists that sometimes their usefulness is not understood. Season 2, despite being weak, in some scenes openly exposes the ongoing supremacy between the inner towns and villages of Uttar Pradesh. Season 1 fans will have less fun in season 2. So much time has passed between the release of the first and second season that people will probably have to watch season 1 again. One reason for this is also that many web series on the crime world of Uttar Pradesh have come on OTT platforms.
In the first season, SSP Naveen Sikhera (Mohit Raina) brings peace and tranquility to the lives of the people of the eastern region by ending the crime empire of Muzaffarnagar’s most notorious gangster Shaukeen (Abhimanyu Singh). In season 2, it is the turn of the ‘Dedha’ brothers ie Chintu (Siddharth Kapoor) and Pintu (Pradeep Nagar) from the western region to confront Naveen, eliminate him and create an empire of brutality in front of the police administration. For this, he is ready to make every conspiracy, does not miss hooliganism and bloodshed, even joins Naveen’s driver to his side so that Naveen can be monitored and he can be eliminated at the right time. Shokeen’s widow Naaz (Bidita Baig), and the real boss of Muzaffarpur i.e. political boss Aslam Rana (Major Bikramjeet Kanwarpal) also help the Dedha brothers. After about ten episodes pass, Naveen first kills Pintu in a shoot-out at a brick kiln and then chases Chintu and shoots him in the middle of the road, ending the season.
There are a lot of abuses in every episode. Sometimes it seems that the people of the villainous race do not even say “Ram Ram” without abusing them. Season 2 is weak in every respect. Abhimanyu Singh’s strong acting and his fierce face in the first season impresses the audience. This time this is expected from Pradeep Nagar. Pradeep’s face creates hatred but he does not get scared. Siddharth Kapoor’s stature is not such that he can be considered a villain. His character is casual. This kind of person doesn’t seem right for a big crime empire. Mohit Raina had to keep the same expression in both the seasons. Anyway, he is not known for acting but for his looks and stature. Boredom is visible on Mohit’s face in the second season as his role is the same in every episode. There are some other characters in which late actor Major Bikramjit Kanwarpal is also included. He did a good job and the makers have dedicated this entire season to him. Bidita Baig gets less work and her roles are similar. There is hypnosis in his eyes and he is looking for better roles.
The writing team Ashish, Jai and Jatin have spared no effort in writing this season. The audience is not shocked, nothing is new for them. Viewers who have seen Mirzapur are now very familiar with the hooliganism and Bahubali tradition of Uttar Pradesh. No one has become hungry in times of hunger. It was necessary to make the police strong, but the character graph of the criminals is very weak. The character’s motive can be explained by showing the back story in the web series, but Bhaukaal 2 does nothing like this, while everything has been there in season 1. Probably that’s why this season is not being promoted so much. Cinematographer Sumit Samaddar’s work can only be called average. There is a lack of budget in some shots, especially the murder of the sarpanch by the Dedha brothers in the village and the parting of Naveen Sikhera (climax). Editor Umesh Gupta might have been tasked with taking the best shots as the story moves in a straight line. The story has stayed away from cinematic tools like ups and downs, flashback, flash forward. Total deposit, Bhaukaal 2 is weak. Those who liked the first season will be disappointed.
